“Stronger Together” will focus on building bridges rather than walls. It will discuss practical ways to ease various types of tensions and conflicts that human beings are facing and will promote tools for peaceful coexistence.
The Summit will give special attention to families separated by the ongoing Korean war, to people who lost their hometowns, and the thousands of unmapped landmines across the DMZ (The line separating South and North Korea), reunification of the Korean Peninsula, and stability of the surrounding region. It will also handle global issues such as inequality, terrorism and climate change, with special focus on Human Security.
The program of the 18th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates includes a wide range of different activities such as panel discussions with Nobel Peace Laureates, forums, Nobel consultations, other events, and culture activities on peace that will be introduced to the audience at this year’s edition.
An important part of the Summit is an extensive Youth program “Leading by Example” that will put a special emphasis on peace culture and bridge-building role of youth. More than 220 students from Korea and the globe are expected to participate this year.
In recognition to its contribution to peace, PyeongChang will be declared a "City of Peace".
Gangwon Governor KIM Jin-tae said “The world peace is being challenged in many ways today”. He also went on saying, “Practical measures to enhance peace of mankind will be discussed in Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea, which have experienced pains of the division of a country and the war.”
“Our aim is to promote and educate culture of peace throughout the world.”
President of the Permanent Secretariat of the Summit Ekaterina Zagladina stated “We hope that the Summit will contribute to peace dialogue on both local and global level. The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates has been for many years a platform for inspiration and fruitful collaboration for people of different backgrounds, and we are very glad to come to Korea for the first time in the history of the Summit.”
The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates was created by late Nobel Peace Laureate, Mikhail Gorbachev in 1999 with clear objectives to contribute to world peace through Nobel Peace Prize winners. It has been, for 20+ years, a meeting point for social, business and political leaders, as well as members of civil society who wish to participate in the peace-building process. Today it is one of the most relevant and renowned events related to the construction of peace and the search for tools to end warfare, foster disarmament and promote world reconciliation. The first World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates took place in Rome, Italy in 1999. The Summit has been hosted by landmark cities for world peace, such as Rome, Paris, Berlin, Hiroshima, Warsaw, Chicago, Bogota, Merida and Barcelona.
“Leading by Example” program was founded in 2012 for local and international students that get to interact with Nobel Peace Laureates and other inspiring speakers through diverse workshops and activities.
